Les Sites inscrits au Patrimoine Mondial de l'Unesco

Des trésors UNESCO à portée de pédale ⭐

Pédalez à la découverte de trois sites exceptionnels inscrits au Patrimoine Mondial de l'UNESCO le long de la Vélomaritime : du Mont-Saint-Michel aux Plages du Débarquement, en passant par les Beffrois des Hauts-de-France !

En 2021 la France comptait 49 biens inscrits au patrimoine mondial. Certains lieux peuvent faire l'objet d'une inscription sur plusieurs sites, ce qui est le cas des Beffrois de Belgique et de France qui regroupe au total 32 beffrois et également les Fortifications de Vauban qui regroupe 12 sites.

En complément, ce sont également 33 biens qui sont sur une liste indicative : des sites candidats à l'inscription dans les cinq à dix années à venir.

Le Mont-Saint-Michel et sa Baie

Situé entre la Normandie et la Bretagne, ce site grandiose est le 3ème site le plus visité de France. Surplombant l’immensité de la baie, l’abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel est le point d’orgue de la visite.

Dans les premiers sites inscrits avec le Palais de Versailles et la Cathédrale de Chartres notamment, le Mont (îlot rocheux) et le cordon littoral de la baie figurant depuis 1979 sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO ainsi que le moulin de Moidrey depuis 2007.

Les plages du Débarquement, candidature déposée

Les plages du Débarquement allié en Normandie représentent cinq plages utilisées lors du débarquement du 6 juin 1944 au cours de la bataille de Normandie pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

En complément de ces plages, un certain nombre de sites sont également proposés à la reconnaissance mondiale comme la pointe du Hoc, la batterie de Longues-sur-Mer, le port artificiel Winston Churchill ainsi que les vestiges subaquatiques au large des plages.

La candidature a été officiellement déposée en 2018.

Tous ces sites sont à voir sur les étapes de la Manche et du Calvados : Utah-Beach > Carentan, Carentan > Grandcamp-Maisy, Grandcamp-Maisy > Port-en-Bessin, Port-en-Bessin > Arromanches-les-Bains

Forts de la Hougue et de Tatihou

À Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, les Forts de la Hougue et de Tatihou sont inscrits depuis 2008 avec 11 autres sites français les plus représentatifs du système de fortifications érigé par l’architecte militaire Vauban.

Ce site est réparti entre la presqu'île de la Hougue et l'île Tatihou et son « îlet ». Distantes l'une de l'autre de 3 kilomètres à vol d'oiseau, le tir croisé de leurs feux interdisait l'accès à la baie de Saint-Vaast.

Le Havre, la ville reconstruite par Auguste Perret

Durement bombardée à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Le Havre est l’une des villes les plus sinistrées d’Europe. Les 150 hectares du centre historique sont dévastés, 12 500 immeubles ont été détruits.

Le centre-ville reconstruit du Havre (1945 - 1964) est l'œuvre de l'architecte Auguste Perret (12 février 1874 - 25 février 1954) qui se vit confier par le ministère de la Reconstruction et de l'Urbanisme, la réédification de la ville.

Le centre-ville reconstruit est inscrit depuis 2005.

Les beffrois des Hauts-de-France

Les beffrois, symboles du nord de la France sont des tours qui renferment les cloches communales. Ils sont généralement associés à l'hôtel de ville.

Les beffrois de Belgique et de France sont cinquante-six beffrois inscrits en France et en Belgique sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO.

The Vélomaritime route leaves Normandy's Marvel behind, taking you via a greenway through the salt meadows. Make the most of the last glimpses you're afforded across to the Mont Saint-Michel set in its great bay before reaching the Sélune Estuary, your gateway to the traditional bocage normand landscapes, consisting of hedge-divided fields. An other lovely greenway leads you gently to the centre of the well-flowered village of Ducey.

The Vélomaritime takes you from Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue into the wetlands of the Parc Naturel Régional des Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin. Make the most of a stop at Quinéville to buy some of the delicious artisanal biscuits made here. Further on, you'll spot the Azeville and Crisbecq Batteries, part of the Germans' World War II Atlantic Wall coastal fortifications, built in the early 1940s. Cycle on to reach Utah Beach, with its 5km-long strand. On D-Day, 6 June 1944, over 20,000 US soldiers and 1,700 vehicles landed here.

You start off along the Vélomaritime from Carentan taking a rather unusual bridge-canal, on which boats and cyclists cross at a higher level than the cars! The route then takes you around the Baie des Veys, an estuary where four rivers converge, offering a peaceful haven for birds and common seals who appreciate the plentiful food supply. You then reach Isigny-sur-Mer, synonymous for human gastronomes with fine butter, cream and cheese! After enjoying a wander through the marshes and alongside the Aure River, you arrive back at the coast at Grandcamp-Maisy.

Cycling along this section is a humbling reminder of the landings of 6 June 1944. Shortly after Grandcamp-Maisy, the cycle route joins the Liberté Greenway, which runs along the clifftops of the Bessin coastline. It takes you to Pointe du Hoc, a landmark site of the Normandy landings, and on to equally symbolic Omaha Beach, where the US troops disembarked under enemy fire. You then cycle on to Port-en-Bessin, where a delicious seafood platter awaits you on the waterfront.

At the start of this stage stands Port-en-Bessin, its port always lively when the fishing boats return, particularly during the scallop season. Head on to discover pretty villages, their lanes lined with long stone walls, and manor-style farms dotted along narrow country lanes. You then reach Arromanches and its famed artificial Mulberry Harbour, towed over from England following the D-Day landings of 6 June 1944 as part of the greater Operation Overlord to win back Normandy.

On this Vélomaritime stage, you ride from the Bay of the Somme to the Bay of Authie. Leaving Le Crotoy, enjoy this resort's lovely views over the Somme Estuary before cycling around to the Parc du Marquenterre, a fabulous place for bird-watching, set in the heart of the Réserve Naturelle de la Baie de Somme. This stage then takes you beside northern Europe's largest range of sand dunes, rising between Saint-Quentin-en-Tourmont and Quend Plage. Finally, skirt around the Bay of Authie to reach the resort of Berck-sur-Mer, with its vast, 12km-long beach made of fine sand. Time to consider replacing your bike with a sandyacht!

The Vélomaritime takes you round the Bay of the Canche via Étaples, a port with the largest British military cemetery in France. Then you ride beside Mont Saint-Frieux Nature Reserve. For a lunchtime rest, choose either to head back to the coast, following the link to the resort of Hardelot, nestled between sea and forest, or to stop at the Château d'Hardelot, with its cycling facilities, a place to grab a bite, plus the castle to visit. Finally comes Boulogne-sur-Mer, France's leading fishing port, designated a Ville d’Art et d’Histoire for its cultural riches. Beside the main town beach, Nausicaá, boasting Europe's largest aquarium, is a sealife centre that transports you deep into the world's oceans!

Before reaching Cap Gris-Nez, the closest point to England, plan a stop at the Maison du Site des Deux Caps in Audinghen, a must for the discovery of this exceptional site. Take advantage of the magnificent viewpoints on the Cap Blanc Nez and the Bay of Wissant.
