Where polders and grasslands meet in the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel

Carefree cycling with the family

What could be better than cycling along a “voie verte” greenway without a care in the world, with Mont-Saint-Michel and its surrounding Bay in the background? As a bonus, why not spend an extra day touring the Mont-Saint-Michel?

Practical information:

voie verte baie du mont saint michel

Day 1: from Saint-Benoît-des-Ondes to Beauvoir (30 km - 19 miles)

Leaving from Saint-Benoît-des-Ondes, follow the lovely Duchess Anne Dyke Greenway.

When you leave Vivier-sur-Mer, you can take a break at the Maison de la Baie (Bay Centre). A permanent exhibition here tells you all about mussel farming.

5 kilometres (3 miles) further on, before you reach Cherrueix, you have an ideal picnic site at the Moulin de la Saline (windmill), where the Maison du terroir, a centre promoting local products, is located.

When you get to the stopover town of Beauvoir, you will find shops and food.

Day 2: return trip from Beauvoir to Mont-Saint-Michel (8 km - 5 miles)

This day is dedicated to touring the Mont-Saint-Michel.

A short ride will bring you to the dam and lock (located in the locality known as “la Caserne”). Here, three bike rack areas have been provided and a free passenger shuttle service will take you up to the Mont-Saint-Michel.

Once you are on site, wander through the medieval streets of the Mont-Saint-Michel and explore the village. Then walk up to the Abbey at the top which offers an incredible vista of the bay and the shoreline. A tour of the abbey is free for anyone under 25!

Day 3: from Beauvoir to Saint-Benoît-des-Ondes (30 km - 19 miles)

Before setting off again from Beauvoir, you can visit an unusual wildlife park: Alligator Bay, with the largest number of alligators in Europe. As you walk along wooden pontoons, slip into the shoes of an explorer and observe the 150 alligators, crocodiles, caimans and the extremely rare white alligators in a tropical greenhouse.

On your way back, stop off at Roz-sur-Couesnon. Located on a natural promontory, the town is justly referred to as the Bay’s “balcony”. Enjoy a breath-taking view of the horizon from Cancale to Granville, encompassing the polders and Mont-Saint-Michel.

There are other activities you can enjoy as a family around the trail:

- The Maison des Polders in Roz-sur-Couesnon and its Young Explorer's Guide (in French)

- The Little Sea Train in Cherrueix fr exploring the Bay

- Sand yachting on the Hirel shore
