Pink sandstone – an identity marker
Whereas the pink granite rock found in the west of the Côte d’Armor department was formed by magma cooling down, the pink sandstone rock of Erquy-Fréhel was formed by successive layers of compressed sand, dating back 470 million years. Its pinky hue, caused by iron oxide, and its hardness as a siliceous rock made it a noble material that was popular during the early 20th century for buildings and paving stones. The stone gives local buildings that special charm.
